For a long time, the value chain in the energy sector has remained relatively constant. Value creation has been closely linked to demand fulfilment through production and distribution. 

 has exercised great care in optimising these stages to provide cost-effective services to the citizens and businesses in the Gothenburg region. However, the energy sector is on the cusp of significant transformation: New technologies are unlocking a wealth of opportunities, expanding the once simple energy value chain into a diverse ecosystem where new competitors are reshaping how and where value is created, delivered and experienced by the customer, challenging the once taken-for-granted dominance and relevance of established companies.

To maintain relevance in this evolving market, energy companies need to look beyond mere demand fulfilment, calling for a change of perspective. Göteborg Energi engaged EGGS and Sopra Steria to help them understand and realise their potential in the changing energy market. Leveraging methods rooted in business- and service design, what started as an exploration of context and business potential, shifted into a focus to help the company transform from solely an energy supplier into an energy solutions provider, laying the foundation for new opportunities within the emerging field of energy services (EaaS).

Using existing resources to future-proof the offering

 By using GE’s customer data, including information about buildings, their energy efficiency, structures and systems, B2B customers can get information about how well they perform in energy efficiency. This is a step on the way for Göteborg Energi to develop their offering to not only be a provider of energy, but also a provider of knowledge and consulting  - EaaS – Energy as a Service. 

EGGS and Sopra Steria Sweden assisted Göteborg Energi in developing a strategy for data-driven service and product development, centered around sustainability. The amount and quality of GE customer data is both unique and significant, which is why data-driven services became one of the pillars of our service exploration.

We performed a comprehensive analysis of the internal and external environment, including mapping of internal competency, the competitive landscape, emerging tech and business models, mega and micro trends. The insights gained were used to see how the company could leverage existing data and their competitive strengths, highlighting areas prone for improvement, innovation and competence building. The findings were summarised into focus areas and a 

 of initiatives, including concrete recommendations for next steps, and an organisational framework for innovation.

Roadmap


Based on the company’s current state and strategy, and market opportunities, we developed a set of 

 concepts. Selecting the idea with the most potential, we designed a visual prototype of the solution, including a brand, webpage and sales pitch. This concrete representation provided internal stakeholders with a tangible starting point, enabling them to grasp the real-world potential of a new service offering.

The project has helped Göteborg Energi to reevaluate their current capabilities, their position and competition, equipping them with the insights needed to refine their strategy and navigate the future with greater clarity and purpose. They have already acted on the recommendations and established an agile team working on taking the product to the market, in the process of redefining its competencies and position in the industry. 

By evolving the business to also include service offerings such as the chosen concept, Göteborg Energi has been given a direction to provide their customers with more value, as well as to contribute to their journey towards sustainable energy consumption.

Leveraging innovative methodologies, they can surface new avenues for growth, creating new value propositions, and develop customer-centric business models that address needs and opportunities in the emerging market.
