EcoAdvisor is a digital application used by the Captain, DP operator, and Chief engineer; therefore, the user interface can be found on the Bridge as well as the Engine Control Room of the vessel.

 is a decision support system aiming to optimise vessel operations, reducing fuel consumption and carbon footprint. The tool results from a joint 'Intelligent Efficiency' research project between Kongsberg Maritime, vessel operator DOF Subsea AS (DOF), Sintef, NORCE, and Innovation Norway.Invited by Kongsberg Maritime, EGGS entered the project to ensure the technology was translated into a viable and user-friendly tool.

Translating tech into a ready-for-market tool

Together with the stakeholders, we helped scope the commercial project. We reframed the user experience through a holistic approach to ensure that the design and development catered to the different professional users of EcoAdvisor.

Maximum fidelity is essential for validation in a professional environment. We collaborated closely with the engineers in the Kongsberg team to ensure that the screens reflected realistic data and figures. Through user interviews, we established the following design principles that guided the designs:


 
Provides each user with all relevant information in a clear format to be understood quickly and efficiently.


 
All content should be available to the user to create redundancy and enable different users to gain value from the system.


Trust is the core dependency of EcoAdvisor. The interface must build trust: clear process descriptions and instructions.


Enforcing positive behaviour and engaging users to interact with EcoAdvisor through behaviour change strategies.

A reframed user experience through design principles

Thanks to its user-friendly and confidence-inspiring design, EcoAdvisor (EA) offers a comprehensive overview of complex information. It can deliver reliable, cost-efficient, and sustainability-supporting advice to operators, gaining their trust and motivation towards using the system.

According to current testing results from 

, if 30% of DP (Dynamic Positioning) vessels use EA, with a utilisation of 80% and a minimum reduction of 5%, this will result in fuel and emissions savings for 1480 MNOK/year. EA has been received with positive response and motivation from the industry and will be installed on more vessels shortly.

Facilitates reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable decision-making

The insight process revealed that the key players could be divided into two groups: customers and crew. While the customers play an essential role in the EcoAdvisor ecosystem, it was established that this project would focus on the crew and gathering insights into their needs for safe operations.
