VPS' digital applications enable their customers to harness the power of their existing onboard data to help support the IMO's (International Maritime Organisation) decarbonisation goals with full emissions transparency. Essentially, Core is a planning tool for making emission reduction goals actionable. To ensure its usability and excellent professional user experience, they asked EGGS for support.

Making data visual and actionable

By inserting information about possible actions to be taken, the ship or cargo owner can see how the carbon emission graph changes in the Core tool. The goal is to reach a coreScore of 100 (zero emissions) by 2030. The scale goes from 0-100, where 100 is the best possible score.

Core allows simulations of results from adjustments and changes to for example, fuel usage, routes, speed, propellers, and technology implementation. In close collaboration with VPS, EGGS has built the front end from scratch. By designing an efficient onboarding flow and intuitive 

, we have ensured a good user experience with a”self-serve” approach, where users easily and intuitively can figure out how to use the tool.

A data-driven and intuitive tool

EGGS has contributed with digital design (UI and UX), user insights, onboarding flow, and front-end coding of VPS' planning tool Core. Visualizing the simulations of the impact of actions to reduce emissions makes it easier for shipowners to make informed and effective decisions. We built the solution from scratch using Next.js JavaScript framework.

Thanks for the intuitive interface – which is quite challenging to create in complex systems for professional users- significant amounts of time and resources are saved when using the tool. Without Core, much of the planning for emissions reduction is done manually in spreadsheets. Due to this, information is often only understood by a few people, which makes the work laborious and inefficient. With the design of Core, planning is more efficient and requires very little training before it can be used.

VPS launched Core in early September 2022, and within one month, three leading vessel owners with a joint vessel count of 150 vessels have decided to sign up for the system. These early users will be instrumental in providing their input to ensure that Core meets the market requirements.
